Sam Smith may be taking a little break from releasing new music, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have anything new to show off to his fans. On Monday (Dec. 7), the "Writing's on the Wall" singer showed off four of his new tattoos on Instagram as well as the deeper meaning behind the fresh ink.

The first tattoo was "self-explanatory" for Smith: an equal sign on his left ring finger, meant to symbolize his feelings about gay marriage and equality.

Despite the romantic tattoo, two of Smith's tattoos emphasize being alone in this world. Most bluntly, he got the word "alone" tattooed on the inside of his left arm. On his right arm, he also got a tattoo symbolizing being alone: two red straight vertical lines. The tattoo mimic the oldest mummified person found buried in the ice alone. Despite the admittedly "melancholy" nature of his new tattoos, Smith emphasized that he is "alone" and not "lonely," and that is OK with him at this point in his life.

The final new ink on Smith's body has a meaning separate from his loneliness and views on love; he got a little word for his fans. On the inside of his right arm, Smith got "honesty" to remind him of the quote "Honesty is my God." With these words, he promises to always be truthful in his music.

These tattoos aren't Smith's first dip into body art. He also has an anchor on his arm and the international sign for male on both of his index fingers.
