Margot Robbie is set to lead the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" film. It will set a separate story from the original franchise, reports said on Friday, June 26.

In an article by Entertainment Weekly, "Birds of Prey" writer Christina Hodson will work with Margot Robbie. The duo will helm the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" film. However, this new project is not related to the sixth film.

The sixth "Pirates" film, a different movie, is set to reboot the series. It is written by "Chernobyl" writer Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott. Elliott was also one of the original writers for the Disney property.

Furthermore, The Hollywood Reporter notes that the Robbie-Hodson "Pirates" movie is not a spinoff. No other details are available at the time. The new film will be "a wholly original story." It is also set to introduce new characters in the "Pirates" universe. It will depart from the five-film series centered on Jack Sparrow.

Additionally, the entire "Pirates" franchise is based on the long-running Disneyland ride of the same name.

Franchise chief Jerry Bruckheimer will oversee both the Robbie-Hodson and the Mazin-Elliott films. Last month, Bruckheimer went in an interview with Collider. He said they're already working on a draft for the sixth film.

Margot Robbie and Christina Hodson: Championing Female Voices in Hollywood

The new "Pirates of the Caribbean" film is the latest project between Margot Robbie and Christina Hodson. They had worked together in the DC film "Birds of Prey" last February.

The "Suicide Squad" star's team up with the "Bumblebee" writer follows their scriptwriting initiative. Last November, Robbie and Hodson launched a female-driven scriptwriting program. They have also involved their respective companies. Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment and Hodson's Hodson Exports joined the initiative.

The project is called The Lucky Exports Pitch Program. It will include Josey McNamara and Tom Ackerley from LuckyChap. From Hodson Exports, Morgan Howell joined the team. Six women will join a four-week writing program. The ladies will draft scripts for action films. The initiative will then pitch the works to movie studios.

"It is no secret that there are more men than women getting hired to write big-budget studio movies," Hodson noted. "And yet, there are a huge number of talented female voices looking to break into this space."

Where is Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Caribbean?"

Now, a separate movie and a reboot are expected in the "Pirates" franchise. However, one question remains for fans: "Will Johnny Depp return?" After the divorce in 2016, "Aquaman" star Amber Heard cast domestic violence charges against Depp. Since then, his roles in "Pirates and the Caribbean" and "Fantastic Beasts" have been criticized and placed at risk.

In the same Collider interview, Jerry Bruckheimer said he was unsure of Depp's involvement. "The one we're developing right now, we're not sure quite what Johnny's role is going to be," the blockbuster producer said.

Last March, Johnny Depp scored a legal victory against his ex-wife. Fairfax, VA County Chief Judge Bruce White, denied Heard's motion to dismiss Depp's $50M defamation lawsuit. The lawsuit includes that the domestic violence allegations cost Depp his spot in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.

As a result of the dragging legal battle between the ex-couple, fans have petitioned to oust Heard from the James Wan-directed "Aquaman 2."
