Riverdale Season 5 is going to resume filming, and stars share details about the upcoming season to air on January 2021.

[Warning: May contain spoilers for Season 4 and Season 5 of the show]

The last episode of Season 4 reveals that the school principal was stabbed to death. Jughead and Betty, played by Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart respectively, discovered footage of the murder. Three more episodes were supposed to be filmed for Season 4. However, filming and production were abruptly shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The said episodes were presumably centered around the school's prom night.

Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa looked at the scenes they got and tried to make a finale out of them. Seeing that many of the crucial scenes between the main characters were not shot yet, they decided to leave it be.

Aguirre-Sacasa and Reinhart revealed more details for Season 5.

One detail that Aguirre-Sacasa shared was that Season 5 would open with the prom scene. He teased a capture of the prom night on his Instagram:

In an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Reinhart confirmed that production would resume. She also joked about how viewers will be able to tell which ones were shot recently and the ones that were shot back in March, before lockdown halted filming.

Some of the cast would be "significantly tanner," and some may have "gained weight during quarantine," she shared. Moreover, she mentions about a seven-year jump - Jughead, Betty, Archie(KJ Apa), Veronica (Camila Mendes), and the rest of the Riverdale gang will graduate after the prom episodes. They will be playing adult versions of their respective characters for the rest of the season.

In an interview on Live with Kelly and Ryan, Mendes revealed that "we'll be seeing these characters like five years from season 4, in their adult life." Since Reinhart mentioned seven years in the Fallon interview, Mendes may have implied that "like five years" was just a rough estimate.

Filming will resume by the end of August in Vancouver. Of course, the Riverdale production will adhere to strict quarantine guidelines.
