A new Kaiju has emerged and someone from the side of humanity has orchestrated their return in Pacific Rim Uprising

On Wednesday, Jan. 24, Legendary released a 2-minute-and-34-second trailer that features exciting new footage from the upcoming movie.

New Heroes

In the anticipated sequel to the 2013 hit sci-fi movie Pacific Rim, John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) is Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot and son of legendary fighter and hero Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), a pilot who sacrificed his life to save the world. Jake, however, abandoned his training and got caught into the criminal underworld.

When a new, more powerful threat emerged, Jake was given another chance by his estranged sister Mako Mori (Rinku Kikuchi) to live up to their father's legacy. He, together with Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood) and Amara Namani (Cailee Spaeny) will lead a new group of Jaegers to face the new Kaiju.

"Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale," reads the synopsis provided by Legendary.

New Jaeger

"Someone let them in," warned Dr. Hermann Gottlieb (Burn Gornam) about the new Kaiju. "Someone from our world."

The new trailer teases a conflict in the midst of Pan Pacific Defense Corps. A few moments later, an unfamiliar Jaeger emerges, ready to fight Jake and Nate. Is the unknown pilot of the rogue Jaeger the person responsible for creating a new portal that transported the new Kaiju to Earth?

The trailer also features brief glimpses of the new Jaeger robots in action. Guardian Bravo is the towering machine with the electrical whip, Saber Athena was the speedster, and Titan Redeemer is the one with the ball and chain. Boyega's character Jake will pilot the Gipsy Avenger.

In a previous interview, the 25-year-old talked about his shiny new Jaeger and how it compares to the fighters from the original movie.

"She's a beauty!," he said about the Gipsy Avenger. "They're slicker. They're faster. [They have] new moves. And what's great about Jaegers, they all have like a "Why" button, a special move that makes them significant and cool. What's great about her is that you get to embody the characters also who are inside the Jaegers. You get to really see the pilots mesh with the robot. It's kind of like an emotional connection with a being."

Pacific Rim Uprising is directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Marvel's Daredevil on Netflix). The movie will land on the big screen on March 23.
