Post Malone and Swae Lee made music history as their song "Sunflower" has been certified double diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

"Sunflower" was a single from the soundtrack to the 2018 animated film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse."

For context, RIAA stands for the Recording Industry Association of America, a trade organization that represents the music recording industry in the United States. Based on their official website, the RIAA originally existed to honor artists and monitor sound recording sales. To put it simply, they are the body that certifies Gold & Platinum Awards to artists on their album and track certifications.

"Sunflower," a song released by Post Malone and rapper Swae Lee is the biggest song that the soundtrack has produced. Not only was it included on the film soundtrack, but the song was also in Posty's 2019 album "Hollywood Bleeding."

The track debuted at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, ranking in the Top 10 of the coveted charts for 33 weeks.

The record was also nominated for two Grammy nods, Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.

'Sunflower' Double Diamond RIAA Certification

On Feb. 8, 2024, RIAA announced that "Sunflower" has been officially certified double diamond, which meant that it has achieved 20 million units in the United States. (via Billboard)

Being the first single in music history to have amassed 20 million units, "Sunflower" surpassed Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus' "Old Town Road" which was only certified platinum 17x.

"Post Malone and Swae Lee have officially raised the bar on what creative partnerships and infectious collaborations have the power to accomplish," RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier said in a statement. "Congratulations Post, Swae Lee and Mercury/Republic Records for making history with the very first 2x diamond single!"

In a video shared on Instagram, Swae Lee and Post Malone were surprised and baffled that the song reached wild success not just in the United States but also globally.

The two received their double diamond plaques as they posed for photos celebrating the momentous accomplishment. In 2023, Post Malone was awarded by the RIAA for having the most diamond singles of any artist in history. Aside from "Sunflower," his tracks "Congratulations," "Psycho," "Better Now," "I Fall Apart," "Rockstar," "White Iverson," and "Circles" were also diamond-certified by the trade association.
