Saxophonist Casey Benjamin has died at the age of 46. No cause of death was initially announced.

The renowned artist was known for his  work on the saxophone and vocoder with the Robert Glasper Experiment.

Fans and colleagues have taken to social media to pay tribute to his life.

Among those expressing their condolences is bassist Derrick Hodge, a bandmate with Casey in the Robert Glasper Experiment.

In an emotional Instagram post, Derrick said, "Tonight, I honor a brother."

 "A true brother and friend. Casey Benjamin, thank you for inspiring me, for being a light in my life, and for your unbelievable influence on the music world. I will carry your smile with me, brother. And we will collectively honor and carry your legacy with us."

 "Can't get my words together at this moment but will echo a few of my last words to you: I'm thankful for you and love you always! Rest well, King."

The "Dig" musician started his musical journey at eight when he first picked up the saxophone.

Casey Benjamin Music and Grammy Wins

Casey Benjamin's career in music took a significant turn when he joined The Robert Glasper Experiment, a collective led by Robert Glasper on keys, piano, and synths.

Casey showcased his versatility by contributing his vocoder, flute, saxophone, and synths skills with his bandmates Derrick Hodge on bass and Chris Dave on drums and percussion.

The band's album Black Radio garnered widespread acclaim, securing the prestigious title of Best R&B Album at the Grammy Awards shortly after its debut.

Their follow-up release album, Black Radio 2, received further recognition at the Grammys, winning Best Traditional R&B Performance in 2015.

Casey Benjamin Collaborations

In addition to his works with the band, Casey Benjamin has created a diverse portfolio, collaborating with other artists across various genres such as jazz, hip-hop, and R&B, solidifying his status as a versatile and respected music artist.

These collaborations with musicians include Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, John Legend, Busta Rhymes, Beyoncé, and many others.

Furthermore, Casey showcased his talents as one half of the funk-pop new wave duo HEAVy alongside Nicky Guiland and a rendition of Stevie Wonder's song, "Jesus Children of America."

During the inaugural LIVE FOR MUSIC event in 2019, Casey joined forces with artists from Lettuce, The Motet, and TAUK for an electrifying funk jam session at THE FUNK SESSIONS in Denver, CO.
