Ariana Grande has officially launched a darker new era with the release of her cinematic music video for "Hate That I Made You Love Me," featuring actor Justin Long in a tense, horror-style storyline that quickly turns surreal.
The video, directed by Christian Breslauer, opens with Long's character burying what appears to be Grande's character in a remote grave site. At first, he seems calm as he drives away, but things quickly spiral when Grande suddenly appears inside his car and even in front of it, causing him to lose control and crash in a fiery wreck, Rolling Stone reported.
Instead of ending there, the story becomes even stranger. Long's character survives the crash and tries to move on, but he continues to see Grande everywhere.
In one scene, while tossing objects into a fireplace, he accidentally catches fire in a chaotic moment that mixes fear with dark humor. Later, he stumbles into a diner where every person looks like Grande, leaving him overwhelmed and confused.

Ariana Grande Unveils Cinematic Visual
The video ends back where it started, with Long returning to the burial site, only to find Grande standing over him with a shovel as he looks up from inside the grave.
Throughout the visual, Grande sings, "Yeah, I, I, I hate that I made you love me," matching the emotional tension of the story.
According to Variety, the track was released as the first single from her upcoming album Petal, set for release on July 31.
Grande has described Petal as a more unfiltered and emotionally raw project. In earlier comments, she called it "a little feral," adding that it comes from a place where she felt free to express herself without holding back. The album was co-written and executive produced by Grande alongside longtime collaborator Ilya, with Max Martin also involved in the single's production.
The video also marks another collaboration between Grande and director Christian Breslauer, who previously worked on her visual project Brighter Days Ahead from her Eternal Sunshine era.
Ahead of the album release, Grande is preparing to launch her Eternal Sunshine tour on June 6 in Oakland, with dates running through early August in Chicago.
