While what happened to AirAsia Flight 8501 in its final minutes remains an official mystery, various theories are being pieced together and considered. One such notion is that the pilot may have actually made a successful water landing on the Java Sea, only to sink before passengers could be safely exit he plane.

One of the interesting developments in the investigation is the fact that the emergency locator doesn't seem to be sending any type of signal. While these devices can be fault, a different kind of theory has also evolved according to a report by The New York Post.

"The emergency locator transmitter would work on impact, be that land, sea or the sides of a mountain, and my analysis is it didn't work because there was no major impact during landing," said Dudi Sudibyo, a senior editor at the aviation magazine Angkasa. "The pilot managed to land it on the sea's surface."

An emergency exit door and inflatable slide were among the debris scattered about 100 miles off the coast of Borneo, which could mean passengers tried to escape after landing."

Searchers have also found pieces of the plane in about 90 feet of water that are as large as 30 feet long. This too could possibly bolster the idea of Flight 8501 ultimately sinking rather than just breaking apart after a violent impact. It almost seems a little more devastating, if that is really possible, to think that this plane could have somehow landed somewhat safely, only to be battered by the waves in the Java Sea, doesn't it?

What are your thoughts on the theories that are circulating? Do you think that the plane fell from the sky in a violent crash that killed everyone instantly or did they fight to survive after a water landing?
