The first full, official trailer for the highly anticipated N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton dropped recently, and it will have fans begging for more. Dr. Dre and Ice Cube introduce the film as something of a necessity nowadays with all the violence in black communities stemming from distrust of law enforcement. "The same thing that we was going through in the '80s with the police, people going through right now," Cube said as the pair rolled through Compton. "It's a good time for us to tell our story," Dre added.
Paul Giamatti, who plays the band's manager, narrated the trailer, speaking to the group about their cultural significance in 1987.
"Let me tell you what I see here," he said in the trailer below, via Billboard. "A lot of raw talent. Swagger. Bravado. People are scared of you guys. They think you're dangerous. But you have a unique voice. The world needs to hear it."
From there the trailer kicked into the origins of the group. A scene with Dre's mother complaining about him "spinning records" and only getting paid $50 is especially relevant considering the producer is now one of hip-hop's richest figures. When Jason Mitchell, dressed perfectly as Eazy-E, spit the opening lines to "Boyz-n-the-hood," Corey Hawkins's Dre excitedly labeled it "dope" from behind the producer's booth.
The trailer builds as the group starts to catch criticism from the outside world.
"Our art is a reflection of our reality," O'Shea Jackson Jr., as his father Cube, stated at a press conference.
Tensions mount as the militant "F**k tha Police" grows in popularity and the group is met with censorship warnings.
"Speak a little truth and people lose they minds," Cube said.
The film is due out Aug. 15, according to its IMDb page.
