Leave it to Geraldo Rivera to make real sense out of the scandal swirling around Brian Williams. NBC suspended their top anchor for six months for embellishing at least one major news story. Unfortunately, Williams seemed to find it necessary to make himself a bit of a hero within his own reporting rather than just telling it like it was, and unfortunately that kind of flaw is fatal in the news business. Rivera believes the network basically offered up a "death penalty" to Williams's career without actually firing him, and therefore has no intention of bringing him back.

A reporter for TMZ caught up with Rivera yesterday near his home base at Fox News, and the iconic news man made a lot of sense. He believes that either NBC should have given Williams a legitimate chance to explain himself and apologize or else it should have fired him. There is no way it will spend the next six months repairing its own credibility only to put the NBC Nightly News anchor back into his old chair. That would only stir the pot all over again and cause a flare-up.

Also, if NBC had just fired him, then rather than discussing Williams's potential future the conversation would have quickly turned toward the network itself and its credibility. Spending six months in limbo will ultimately take NBC out of that scorching hot seat when Williams does not return.
