Mariah Carey is planning to make her presence during the holidays even bigger. According to Deadline, New Line Cinema recently purchased a Christmas movie that has the singer attached in the lead role. Brett Ratner's RatPac Entertainment pitched the project, and writers David Diamond and David Weissman will work out the script. It would be fair to assume that Carey's 1994 classic "All I Want for Christmas Is You" will be involved somehow.

Plot details are scarce, but Christmas will be at the center of the film. Deadline also noted that the movie will include the theme of "how the power of music can transport you back in time to your truest and most authentic feelings."

Carey's Merry Christmas album remains one of the bestsellers in recent years for the holidays. The RIAA has certified the album platinum five times over, with the record having sold 5.37 million copies as of last December. Carey released a sequel to the album, Merry Christmas II You, in 2010. It contained more covers of holiday classics and an "extra festive" version of "All I Want for Christmas Is You."

"It's hard to figure out what's 'extra festive' (as the full song title promises) about her 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' update, and far easier to determine what's wrong with 'Auld Lang Syne' (an awkward dance beat), but the LP's warm heart is in the right place," Rolling Stone wrote.

The diva sang "All I Want for Christmas Is You" during a holiday special filmed in Rockefeller Center last year, and reactions to the performance were mixed.

"Last night's situation was beyond my control. I apologize to all that showed up, you know that I would never want to disappoint you," said Carey, who was running late due to some divorce proceedings with Nick Cannon.
