Following the announcement of his new partnership with Warner Bros. Records, Prince released a new single called "The Breakdown," which he mentioned back in March when he took over the Arsenio Hall Show.
The track opens with echoing keyboard before Prince chimes in with his falsetto. "Listen to me closely as the story unfolds," he croons. "This could be the saddest story ever been told." He recounts a tale of excess and regret over heavy bass, lush strings and laser sound effects.
As part of the new partnership, Warner Bros. will release previously unheard material as well as a digitally remastered, deluxe 30th anniversary edition of the 1984 soundtrack album, Purple Rain. Over the past few months, Prince has teased new music and the release of his 3rdEyeGirl-backed full-length PLECTRUMELECTRUM. He has not yet announced a release date for the effort, though it is expected to drop this year.
