Meghan Trainor won a Grammy for Best New Artist this year and is continuing that big career momentum with the release of her new single “NO,” which leads her sophomore album Thank You. In a new interview her producer Ricky Reed talked the new single and his client.

“We never set out to specifically go after any particular sound,” Reed said in an email to SPIN. “The whole thing started with a rhythm more based off a dancehall idea. The fact that it somehow evolved into what it is now is still a thing of mystery. Unlocking that sound was like opening a Pandora’s box. We decided to keep pushing into scary and exciting new territory and now have an album that fuses what people love about Meghan with future funk, gospel, dancehall, and more.”

Reportedly, “NO” came out of a meeting Trainor had with infamous Epic label head L.A. Reid, who laid down the law with the singer for not having a lead single yet for her sophomore album. Unhappy with Reid, Trainor immediately went into the studio with producer Reed the same afternoon and so “NO” was born.

Trainer is also reportedly trying for a new sound on her sophomore album, and leaving behind the blonde singer found on “All About That Bass.”

“I think this album is going to cause people to see her through a new lens,” Reed wrote in the email. “She’s one of the most talented artists I’ve ever been in the room with.”
