SunSquabi Premiere Funky 'Odyssey' EP on Griz's All Good Records

All Good Records has been a place to find some of the funkiest electronic jams in the industry. Helmed by saxophone-wielding GRiZ, it has started to build a small stable of artists pushing the mission of quality, funky and free music for the masses. The latest to join the cause is three-piece band SunSquabi hailing from Boulder, Colorado. The trio is releasing their new 7-track EP, Odyssey today with features from label boss GRiZ and Big Gigantic's Dominic Lalli and we have the stream premiere for you.

The EP crosses over into various elements of funk, soul, electronic, jazz and a little hip-hop as Sunsquabi bring what they do as a "true live band" into the studio. The EP ranges from upbeat, more danceable tracks like "Pablito" to more soothing, soulful cuts like "Sticky."

"The recordings on the EP will portray all the elements of a live band plus digital and analog production. The drum recordings are the best we have ever done to date and we wanted to really showcase Butters (Chris Anderson) on the EP," says the group. "What you are going to see live is naturally going to reflect more energy than what is on the recording as we can improvise each set to the mood of the audience."

The name Odyssey is exactly that - a journey, representing what the band has been doing since their inception. "Each song represents a specific time or place or person that has shaped the band not only musically but as individuals," remarks SunSquabi. It also provides a peak into the future for what fans should expect from them.

The trio link up with GRiZ on the saxophone-heavy titled track "Odyssey". GRiZ was drawn to SunSquabi by their musical talent and positive attitude, which is a must for the All Good Records family.

Speaking on their collaboration, GRiZ says, "Kevin [Donohue] had the track done and wanted me to smooth some saxophone over his lead line and funk it up a bit with a swift solo type break thing."

One of the strongest records on the LP is "Tequila Mockingbird," which comes with the steady hand of Big Gigantic's Dominic Lalli, bringing a little extra energy and gritty electronic bass.

The EP is out now on All Good Records to purchase on iTunes and stream below on SoundCloud.
