Mel C recalled when she and Spice Girls broke a royal protocol decades ago.

In 1997, the Prince's Trust marked its 21st anniversary. At that time, King Charles III - who was still known as the Prince of Wales - met the girl group's members: Mel C, Mel B, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, and Victoria Beckham.

In a new interview with PEOPLE via Zoom, Mel C looked back at that infamous moment and recalled how they ignored all the royal protocol. For what it's worth, Hallowell and Mel B planted kisses on King Charles III's cheeks, leaving him with heavily lipsticked kiss marks.

"At the time, I was one of the shyer members of the band, so I was cringing inside as the girls were kissing Prince Charles. I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I can't believe they're doing it.' But now I'm really proud that the girls did that because I think that's part of the reason the world fell in love with the Spice Girls," she said.

Mel C added that they only did what people wished them to do and said that they did so without malice.

But now that King Charles III has become the monarch, the event reportedly looks naughtier than ever. It led her to call her co-members "naughty," as well.

Spice Girls Went Through Downs

Despite the memorable events in their career as a band, the Spice Girls also went through difficulties in the past years. In fact, the members also suffered depression amid their popularity,

In her upcoming memoir, "THE SPORTY ONE: My Life as a Spice Girl," Mel C said that they want the public to see what the band looks like behind the scenes. She herself suffered criticism because of her appearance, leading her to suffer from an eating disorder as she cut back on food and exercised more than she could.

Fans noticed something different about her, and she revealed in her memoir that she was indeed struggling while filming the "Spice World" movie and reached the point where she was at her thinnest.

"I think that's why I avoided it for so long. I was very thin at that point, and for a long time, that was hard to watch," she said.

She was diagnosed with depression in the early 2000s, but she pushed herself to undergo therapy and receive medication to ease all the issues she had.
