Sam Smith says they have lost supporters as a result of "homophobia and transphobia." The pronoun they is what the artist chose to identify with.

Since the "Unholy" singer came out as non-binary in 2019 and requested to be referred to as they/them, he believes that some fans have stopped listening to his music.

Smith explained that in terms of music, they believe that homophobia and transphobia have alienated some from wanting to listen to their music. It's difficult, they personally said, because listeners are digesting their music quite differently from how they are digesting the music of others, especially of non-LGBT artists.

They added that their music has always been homosexual. The theme of "In The Lonely Hour" was falling in love with a straight man. It's intriguing how politics can sometimes seep into people's musical tastes, they said.

The 30-year-old Grammy winner claimed that all non-binary and trans individuals desire is recognition of their identity.

Smith stated on the "Changes" podcast by Annie Mac that they are not attempting to abolish gender with their thoughts or their expression.

They added that for the time being, it is sufficient to recognize that there is a third box and that trans persons do exist. They added that the life of each and every one is of equal significance.

Recently, the "Stay with Me" hitmaker discussed their "transitional three years" and how they now know what they want to express after discovering more about themselves.

The top-charting artist stated that  after the COVID pandemic, everyone's craving to be among people again, and they are definitely experiencing it.

"I've had a transitional three years in my life. I turned 30, I think I know what I want to say now, I think I know who I am a bit more, and I'm ready to have fun," they shared.
The lead single from the impending follow-up to 2020's "Love Goes" is "Unholy" featuring Kim Petras.

Smith published the ballad "Love Me More" in April, which documents their :honest introspection" of their "relationship with themselves on a path of self-discovery and happiness."
Smith is scheduled to perform two consecutive concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London on October 21 and 22.

"Unholy" by Sam Smith and Kim Petras ascends to the top of the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl, U.S. charts. After its first full week of tracking following its release on September 22nd, the popular song ascends to the top of the charts for both British and German musicians. In addition, OneRepublic's "I Ain't Worried" enters the top five of the Global 200, bringing the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack to new heights.
