Ariana Grande Now 2022: 'Wicked' Rehearsals

Unbeknownst to many, Ariana Grande has been cast as Glinda in the upcoming movie adaptation of "Wicked," one of the longest-running musicals on Broadway.

Grande is starring opposite Tony-winning singer Cynthia Erivo, who will play Elphaba, the green-tanned Wicked Witch of the West. The duo will be playing the iconic "loathing" enemies turned best friends as Elphaba runs away to the fearing public with Glinda's help.

On the recent Pinnochio Red Carpet Premier, Erivo sang praises to her co-stars, complimenting her experiences working with her during the film rehearsals.

"I love her, truly. She is funny and unbelievably talented and unbelievably sweet and truly working hard. We're both working really hard together. I'm excited for both of us," Erivo said in a statement to Variety.

Originally in the Broadway musical, Idina Menzel originated Elphaba while Kristin Chenoweth played Glinda. Earlier this April, the "Wicked" movie got an important update from its director, Jon M. Chu. The movie will be released in two parts, one in December 2024 and one in December 2025.

"I was like, 'Well alright then, I guess we've got our work set ahead of us.' It's full on. And kind of exciting, because it means that we have more of the story to tell - more room, more real estate to tell these two stories," the singer furthered.

Immediately, "BLONDIANA IS BACK" trended on Twitter, with Arianators gushing over Grande's new look.

The recolor was actually on point. As in the original production, Kristin Chenoweth, who first played Glinda on Broadway, was blonde. Notably, in the music, Glinda's "blondeness" impacts her characters in a way that is a distinct feature of hers.

While it was not yet confirmed, fans are guessing that filming for "Wicked" must have started already because of the pop star's new hair color.

Meanwhile, as to Ariana Grande's new music, the "Positions" singer would not be back for the recording studio for a long time until after the two "Wicked" films were released.
