Hailed as one of the longest-running musicals on Broadway, "The Phantom of the Opera" is extending its highly-acclaimed run at the Majestic Theatre next year.

Supposedly, the show will have to take its final curtain call on Feb. 18, 2023. However, because of certain factors, 'The Phantom of the Opera' New 2023 Closing Date was recently announced.

'The Phantom of the Opera' New 2023 Closing Date Revealed

According to the show's website, "The Phantom of the Opera" will be celebrating its 35th anniversary in January, weeks before its supposed closing show.

Playbill reported that the new "The Phantom of the Opera" closing date would be on Apr. 16, 2023. Upon the production's final bow, the musical will have played a total of 13,981 performances - cementing it as the longest-running musical in Broadway history.

But what caused the "The Phantom of the Opera" to extend its run on Broadway?

The publication reported that the musical had amassed more ticket sales ever since the announcement of its farewell show. Recent data shows that the week of Nov. 14-19, 2022 saw the Andrew Lloyd Webber production's biggest week so far in the past few years.

Raking around $1.8 million in ticket sales, "The Phantom of the Opera" has recorded its highest-grossing week since before the pandemic shut down Broadway, its biggest so far since December 2019.

However, the publication noted that this might be the longest extension offered to the production as the Majestic Theatre is due to close because of major renovations.

Showrunner Lloyd Webber is delighted with the "incredible reaction" from the public upon knowing the show will take its final bow.

"Phantom at The Majestic is extending. If only the theatre wasn't closing for a major refurbishment, we'd be there for an awful lot longer. I would love to thank everyone who has made this extension possible, from our cast and crew, to our brilliant musicians and everyone at The Majestic Theatre," he said in a statement.

The show already made history as the first production to have reached 10,000 performances last February 2012. Over to the west end, it holds the title for the second-longest running musical, next to "Les Miserables."

"The Phantom of the Opera" has scored 7 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and 7 Drama Desk Awards.
