A few days before the Doobie Brothers' anniversary tour starts, Johnston announced that he would not be able to join the group as he is scheduled to undergo surgery. He was also advised to take time off while waiting.

According to the press release, as cited by Ultimate Classic Rock & Culture, Johnston will not join the band until he recovers.

"I hope for a speedy recovery and can't wait to get back on the road and continue doing what I love," Johnston said, adding: "I would like to thank Pat, Michael, John and the entire Doobie Brothers band for covering for me while I recover from back surgery. I'm sure they will bring it every night as they always do."

Johnston's statement did not reveal how and when he sustained the injury, but his health issue came months after Simmons expressed his excitement to be on the tour again and work with his bandmates.
