Lizzo Gave Tina Turner A Poignant Tribute While On Arizona Concert Stop – Watch

The world lost the talent that was Tina Turner on May 24, 2023. The trailblazing music icon passed away at 83 years old in her home in Switzerland. Meanwhile, artists in the United States have been mourning her death. Tributes and messages have circulated all over social media to commemorate her passing.

Lizzo, on the other hand, chose to honor her idol the way she wanted to be - during her concert stop in Arizona for her "Special" tour.

Lizzo's Tina Turner Tribute In Arizona Concert

Midway into her concert setlist at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, Lizzo dedicated a short moment to honor her late idol, Tina Turner.

"Today, we lost an icon," she said before performing. "And I haven't allowed myself to be sad. I haven't allowed myself to cry about it. And I don't want to right now because I'd much rather celebrate the incredible legend Tina Turner is. As a black girl in a rock band, I would not exist if it was not for the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll."

Lizzo was dressed for the occasion. She wore a blue-green sequined body-hugging outfit while sporting some dark brown curls.

She went on to make a chant saying "There would be no rock and roll without Tina Turner," to which the audience responded in more roaring applause and deafening cheer.

Shortly after, Lizzo started to dance as "Proud Mary" started to blast on the arena. She was accompanied by two backup dances, similar to the original performance of "Proud Mary."

Lizzo sang only until the first chorus of the song which fans clearly were very delighted and honored to see such a poignant tribute to the Queen of Rock and Roll.

On social media, people like Michelle Obama, Oprah, Diana Ross, Viola Davis, Jennifer Hudson, and many more have offered their tributes and condolences to the late music icon.

Lizzo Credits Tina Turner As Her Hero

In the past, the "Special" singer has fondly talked about Tina Turner. When she was slammed for making music for a white audience, Lizzo hit back, saying that was the same criticism that her idol Tina Turner had experienced, too.

"I am not making music for white people. I am a black woman. I am making music from my black experience for me to heal myself [from] the experience we call life. If I can help other people, hell yeah," she said at the time.

According to Rolling Stone, it was the same thing that Tina Turner did for children like Lizzo back then.
