Swedish supergroup ABBA joined and won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with their hit song "Waterloo," which catapulted them into international success, resulting in ABBAmania.

In celebration of ABBA's historic victory, the BBC will be broadcasting a series of special programs next month, including When ABBA Came to Britain, and More ABBA at the BBC, a documentary of about the band's success in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s, including live performances and interviews.

"When ABBA came to Britain is a love letter from this country to the beloved Swedish supergroup, celebrating the special relationship we have as a nation with Benny, Björn, Agnetha and Anni-Frid," said Rachel Davies, commissioning editor at the BBC Pop Music TV. "We focus on the stories of individuals who were lucky to be caught up in their world. A must watch for pop fans of all ages."

Eurovision Presents ABBA World

Since ABBA became international superstars thanks to the Eurovision Song Contest, it was only fitting that a massive celebration and commemoration of the band's career would occur.

As per the Eurovision website, Malmö visitors have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience ABBA World, which will include a museum tour and viewing of ABBA Voyage, the musical film Mamma Mia!, and a Mamma Mia! Party.

How ABBA Became International Superstars

The four-membered group participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in April 1974; they were one of 17 contestants.

The band consisted of two married couples: Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

Their debut studio album was released in 1973, followed by Waterloo in 1974. ABBA's third album ABBA yielded the fan-favorite hits "SOS" and "Mamma Mia!"

"There can be fewer bands, if any, who have straddled generations of British music fans in a more impressive way than ABBA," said Mark Robinson of Wise Owl, who produced the documentary.

"This film shows the enduring and often emotional impact that ABBA have left on British fans and musicians across the decades, but we will also chart the key role that Britain played in the band's history - from the music of groups like The Beatles to playing host to defining moments in their career."

ABBA disbanded in 1982 but reunited again in 2016 to 2022 to release their ninth and final album, Voyage, in 2021.
