Music producer and television personality Stevie J is facing a lawsuit from a royalty recovery company that claims he improperly diverted royalty income and failed to pay the firm its contractual share of earnings tied to a catalog of songs.
According to an exclusive report published by AllHipHop, the legal dispute centers on an agreement signed in September 2005 between Stevie J, whose legal name is Steven Jordan, and a company called Royalty Recovery. The firm alleges it was appointed as the producer's exclusive representative for locating and collecting unpaid royalties connected to a designated group of recordings.
Court filings reportedly claim the agreement entitled Royalty Recovery to 35% of recovered royalties and that the arrangement was intended to remain in effect indefinitely for the covered works, as per TMZ. The company argues that the contract applied not only to previously uncollected royalties but also to future revenue streams generated by the same catalog, including advances, renewals and other related income.
The lawsuit alleges that the relationship began to unravel around 2011 when Stevie J allegedly started routing royalty payments through businesses under his control. According to the complaint, one such entity, known as The Kompany, was used to receive payments that otherwise should have been subject to the existing agreement with Royalty Recovery.
The company claims that Stevie J told different folks the original royalty contract was null and void. This let him ink deals without splitting the dough with the firm.
As per the lawsuit, he scored more advances and royalty-linked cash in roughly June 2020 and June 2024. Yet, the firm maintains it didn't get its share, even though their deal was still live.
They don't mention how much they want in damages in the suit. The actual money claims will be hashed out in court later on. For now, they want the courts to figure out all the cash earned from the album and confirm the '05 deal is ironclad.
Besides the cash compensation, they're going after punitive damages, legal costs, and more from Stevie J and related businesses.
This legal kerfuffle is just the latest issue Stevie J has had. Still, he keeps rocking the entertainment scene with his hits and TV roles. As of Tuesday, he had not publicly responded to the allegations.
The case remains pending, and the allegations outlined in the lawsuit have not been proven in court.
