Sony Classical conductor Teodor Currentzis will release a new album, The Sound of Light, with his orchestra and choir MusicAeterna in February. The 2015 album will be an anthology of master composer Jean-Philippe Rameau to celebrate his 250th anniversary year. It will be his second album with the company.
Currentzis will celebrate the composer's arias and orchestra works with a selection taken from Rameau’s most influential stage œuvres, including Les Fêtes d’Hébé, Zoroastre, Les Boréades, Les Indes galantes, Castor et Pollux and Platée, among others, and illustrate his unique interpretation of the composer’s music. Several of the album's arias will be sung by soprano Nadine Koutcher. The album drops Feb. 3.
“The most amazing phenomenon in life is light,” states Currentzis in a press release. “It allows us to breathe, to live, to love. So how to explain to someone who has never been embraced by the sun what light actually is? I would play them music by Rameau. Rameau’s music radiates the richest Apollonian light.”
This newest album is the second release in Sony’s exclusive, long-term agreement with Greek-born and Russian-based Currentzis and MusicAeterna. The project brings attention to the artistic community that is currently flourishing on the edge of Siberia. Based at the Perm State Opera and Ballet Theatre, where Currentzis is artistic director, the conductor and ensemble have made an international name for themselves through their no-compromise approach to rehearsals and recordings, the rare creative environment they foster and through the sheer quality of the music they are creating.
