If you thought that Irish singer-songwriter Hozier couldn't get any cooler, than you hadn't heard him cover Sam Smith. This week, the "Take Me to Church" crooner visited the BBC Radio 1 live lounge and tackled his fellow U.K. pop star's massive hit "Lay Me Down."

If you were expecting the same dramatic flair as Smith's original, then this cover is not for you. In the live lounge, Hozier gave "Lay Me Down" a rock-driven, funky makeover complete with female backup singers, a ripping bassline and a drumbeat so grooving you can't help but try and dance to the track.

Thanks to Hozier's throaty vocals, the emotion of the heartbreaking song still comes through.

If you love this cover, then you're not the only one. Shortly after Hozier's major swap of "Lay Me Down" was released and went viral, the song's writer Smith himself congratulated his comrade on a successful cover on Twitter, saying that he loved it.

And the bondfest didn't end there, with Hozier exchanging pleasantries right back at Smith.

This isn't the first time that Hozier has slayed a cover in the BBC Radio 1 live lounge. Earlier this year, he gave a similiar makeover to Ariana Grande's pop hit "Problem."
