Apparently the historic box office failure that was Zac Efron's We Are Your Friends has not stopped major studios from shying away from EDM on TV. Steve Angello has signed on as an executive producer for a new EDM TV drama aptly titled The Drop. The show was just picked up by the CW and CBS TV Studios with Nashville executive producer R.J. Cutler also lending his talents to the show.

According to Deadline, the show will take place in Miami's non-stop, luxurious electronic music scene. It centers on a DJ teetering on the edge of ruin who manages to find hope (and more) in a female, African American DJ. This combination is a rarity in the dance music world and is being played up in the show, which could just be a gimmick, but hopefully it is actually used to shine a light on the social imbalances within electronic music. This is probably just wishful thinking though.

She becomes his protégé and more as they try and navigate the very competitive Miami dance music environment.

The show was written by musician-writer Kyle Jarron (A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant) and Culter is set to direct. The two will executive produce with Frank Marshall and Robert Zotnowski of Kenny/Marshall. Angello is on board as an executive music producer.

It will be interesting to see what type of music Angello comes up with for the show. He barely has time to produce his own records, so it would be hard to imagine he would have the time to make a whole bunch of original music for the show like what Major Lazer did for their own show. Diplo did have the help of Ariel Rechtshaid to make the music, which is a route Angello could take if he does make new music for the show. He could also just curate soundtracks for each episode.
