The recently released trailer for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again teased a major character death. The preview seems to hint that Donna, played by Meryl Streep, is already dead.

The opening scene brings viewers back to the Greek island, where Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried, lives with her mother, Donna. It begins where the first film left off, with Sophie back on the island after she and Sky skipped their wedding to travel instead.

However, something is off, and fans immediately picked up on one major character being MIA. The opening scene is a dead giveaway that Donna is no longer around. The trailer opens with Sophie on the docks as she greets her mother's closest friends Rosie, played by Julie Waters, and Tanya, played by Christine Baranski. She also reveals that she is pregnant and worries that she cannot handle the pregnancy by herself.

Of course, Sophie is not really alone. Her fiancé, Sky, played by Dominic Cooper, is still around. He is seen in the later part of the trailer.

Adding fuel to speculation that Donna may be dead in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is the line from Rosie and Tanya. They tell Sophie that her "mother is the bravest person we ever met." The trailer then launches into several flashback scenes of Donna in her younger years, played by Lily James. The trailer reminisces about Donna's adventures and her courage in facing her pregnancy by herself. The preview also gives viewers a history of her past romantic flings with the young Harry, Sam, and Bill.

In the latter part of the trailer, Sophie also says something that further hints at Donna's death. It is also worthy to mention that everyone is talking about Donna in the past tense.

"I've never felt closer to my mom. She wasn't scared because she had me," Sophie tells Sky in the trailer.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again clearly focuses on Donna and her life on the Greek island. It shows how she raised Sophie by herself without a clue if Sam, Bill, or Harry is the father. It is sad to think that Donna is not at the present time to tell Sophie all about her life on the island.

However, fans are not entertaining the possibility that Donna is dead. It would not be Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again without Donna. Universal would not confirm if she is alive or dead, although the film credits still list Streep as a cast.
