Shawn Mendes shares the story behind his awkward encounter with Queen Elizabeth II last month. The incident occurred during the Queen's 92nd birthday.

The "In My Blood" singer told Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that he had found himself standing beside the Queen for 10 minutes before her birthday show commenced. The Queen did not talk to Mendes so he also did not talk to her.

It is royal protocol to wait for the Queen to speak to someone first, and if she does not, non-royals cannot talk to her. Mendes also said that the Queen did not even look at him even once.

"She does it every year so I'm like she's probably like, 'Oh, here again. I don't even know this kid," joked Mendes.

Shawn Mendes Chickened Out

However, Mendes's non-conversation with Queen Elizabeth II was not the only awkward run-in he had at the time. The singer said that he entered the room where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were in and wanted to say hello, but he chickened out at the last minute.

"This is gonna be my biggest regret forever: I was walking down the halls and I see them in one room and they're just talking. I walked in with this confidence and the second they kind of felt me coming, I just turned around and my body went numb and I was like, 'Can't do it, can't do it,'" recounted Mendes.

He also admitted to feeling so starstruck when he saw the royal couple. Markle and Prince Harry will tie the knot on Saturday, May 19. Their wedding ceremony will take place at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.

'Where Were You' Released

In related news, Mendes dropped his new single, "Where Were You in the Morning," on Thursday. The track is about a one-night stand where the woman bailed on the man the next morning.

"Where Were You in the Morning" is a follow-up to Mendes' recently released tracks "In My Blood" and "Lost In Japan." All three songs will be included in the Canadian singer's forthcoming album Shawn Mendes.
