Singer-actress Melissa Benoist has flown from the small screen to Broadway. The Supergirl star has recently made her stage debut as Carole King on Beautiful.
The 29-year-old officially joined the cast of the critically acclaimed musical on June 12, Tuesday, at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
Melissa Benoist Leads Cast Of 'Beautiful'
Benoist first rose to fame when she was cast as one of the new leads of Ryan Murphy's Glee back in 2014. She then traded the microphone for a cape when she landed the role of Kara Danvers on The CW's Supergirl in 2015. She also recently appeared on the six-part series Waco.
The renowned television star is showing her range as she stars for a limited run on Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, a bio-jukebox show that recounts the life of the singer-songwriter from when she was 16 years old. As King, Benoist performed classics such as "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," "You've Got A Friend," "Some Kind of Wonderful," and the titular track "Beautiful."
In an interview with Play Bill, the actress recounted how she discovered the music icon and how King's songs resonate in her life. She said that her mother had a vinyl of Tapestry, King's 1971 album, in their home when she was young.
"I always had an emotional, sentimental connection to it. She's so emotive when she sings it," she explained. Benoist also described King as a superhero in her own right. "She is her own kind of Supergirl. For sure."
Evan Todd, Jessica Keenan Wynn, and Ben Jacoby complete the cast of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway.
Benoist will only be performing on Broadway until Aug. 4. After that, Chilina Kennedy will return to the role of King in the production's next run.
'Supergirl' Season 3 Finale
Benoist has received mostly positive responses from audiences and critics alike, however, the television actress still has to return to National City sometime soon. Supergirl is renewed for Season 4 by The CW and Benoist, of course, will reprise the role of Kara Danvers.
Not much is known about the upcoming season, but Digital Spy reports that the superhero series will be adding a transgender character to its already diverse set of cast. A character named Nia, an alien from the planet Naltor, will join the series when it premieres later this year.
In the meantime, Supergirl Season 3 will air its season finale next week on The CW.
