Andrew Woolfolk, popularly known for being Earth, Wind & Fire's longtime saxophonist, has passed away at the age of 71; what was his cause of death?

Fellow bandmate Philip Bailey took to Instagram to confirm the tragic news and recalled their early years, saying they met in High School and quickly became friends and bandmates.

The musician confirmed that his good pal died "after being ill [for] over six years]," although the cause of death was revealed, he did not disclose what kind of medical condition Woolfolk suffered from.

"He has Transitioned on to the forever, from this Land of the dying to the Land of the Living. Great memories. Great Talent. Funny. Competitive. Quick witted. And always styling. Booski... I'll see you on the other side, my friend," he concluded. (via Billboard)

Per the outlet, the saxophonist joined the legendary band in 1973. Aside from his instrument, he also served as a flutist.

He played with the group on and off until 1993.

Woolfolk is popularly known for his highly-energetic, dancefloor-ready saxophone sound, especially on the band's iconic 1978 song "September."

The track amassed massive success through the decades, and it hit the Billboard hot 100 top 10 over 40 years ago.

"September" never lost its relevance as it continues to garner sales and streams every year, especially on September 21, as the lyrics read, "do you remember? 21st night of September?"

Last year, the song amassed 1.5 million streams in the United States, a 322% surge over September 20 when the song only got 352,000 hits.

Woolfolk achieved his legendary status along with his bandmates in 2000 when they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

That night, the musician wore a fiery red suit jacket and performed a solo number on "Shining Star."
