Will Chris Cornell's Soundgarden bandmates reunite years after his death?

When Cornell died in 2017, it seemingly put an end to Soundgarden, as well. The surviving members of the rock group remain active in the recent years since then, but they never talked about the band's potential return.

However, it is worth noting that guitarist Kim Thayil, drummer Matt Cameron, and bassist Ben Shepherd collaborated in some cases.

In 2019, they appeared on one stage again to join a star-studded I Am the Highway concert event in Los Angeles to celebrate the late musician's life.

Despite that, things have been rough for them after the frontman's death. The members also have infamous public battles with Cornell's widow, Vicky.

With that, the final Soundgarden album is yet to arrive - and it remains unknown whether it will still be released soon.

While waiting for it, Ultimate Classic Rock & Culture noted what the members are doing right now.

Thayil has been focusing on collaborating with several artists, including Wayne Kramer, Brian Posehn, and Barret Martin Group, among others.

Cameron, meanwhile, shifted his focus on his other grunge group - Pearl Jam. He also joined Foo Fighters' Taylor Hawkins in Nighttime Boogie Association.

Lastly, Shepherd seemingly chose to be out of the public eye. He has been managing his bar, Hazlewood, while spending his time in his Seattle home.

Remembering Chris Cornell

Cornell left Soundgarden for good when he died by suicide in his Detroit hotel room in 2017.

He died after the band had a concert at Fox Theatre in Detroit, Michigan. His bodyguard, Martin Kirsten, gave him two doses of Ativan - an anti-anxiety drug - before leaving Cornell and going back to his room.

His wife Vicky noticed that the lights in her home were flickering on and off. Cornell had an app on his phone that could operate the lights remotely. With that, the wife immediately called him after feeling worried.

She asked him what he had taken since he was slurring his words. Although Cornell assured her that he was okay, Vicky asked Kirsten to check on the singer - but he found his dead body instead.

Per the Wayne County Medical Examiner (via Associated Press), the vocalist claimed his life by hanging. The then-Director of Media Relations for the Detroit Police Department, Michael Woody, said that the police received a 911 call from a family friend, saying that the pal went to the singer's hotel room at MGM Grand Detroit to check on him.

However, the friend found the singer unresponsive while lying on the bathroom floor with an exercise band around his neck. Cornell was then pronounced dead at the scene.
