On Wednesday, Sam Smith posed for a risqué shirtless mirror selfie and appeared as assured as ever. This is a massive achievement for them, as they once said they suffered from serious body image issues.

They/them pronouns are used by the non-binary singer, 30, who proudly displayed their many tattoos while posing for pictures in New York.

Sam has long been outspoken about their struggles with body confidence. In a previous interview, Sam said they had started to learn to accept their "curves" after revealing they used to starve oneself "for weeks" in advance of picture shoots.

Sam shared the shirtless selfie on their Instagram stories as well as their Instagram feed.

Sam flaunts their figure in the seductive photo while wearing only socks and a pair of denim pants.

Sam shows their tattoos, which include a bird and an equality symbol, while posing with their arm raised. The photos surfaced following rumors that Sam had employed a "gay diversity supervisor" to ensure that no pronoun usage errors were made in the music videos.

The cast and crew of Sam's most recent music video are "terrified" of saying the wrong thing because the singer also gave them an LGBTQ diversity on-set manifesto and information sheet before the project's filming began.

But lately, no matter who they are, Smith's musical ability speaks for itself. With their joint single, "Unholy," Sam Smith and Kim Petras made history by becoming the first openly nonbinary and transgender musicians to top the Billboard Hot 100.

Billboard confirmed the duo's achievement on Twitter, writing: "@samsmith and @kimpetras are the first publicly non-binary and transgender artists, respectively, to earn a No. 1 song on the #Hot100, thanks to 'Unholy.'"

Following its publication last month, the audacious song depicting an extramarital relationship shot to the top of the charts. More than 29 million people have watched the music video that goes with it on YouTube.

The controversial song about infidelity in relationships spent four weeks at the top of the UK charts, peaked in more than 100 countries, and was remixed by electronic duo Disclosure. It's Sam's ninth number one, but for guest artist Kim it's remarkable since she's finally charted in the top 40 after years of dreaming about it.

The 30-year-old has been making music since she was a teenager, even though her first song, "I Don't Want It At All", and first album "Clarity" were both published in 2017 and 2019, respectively.
