David Foster acknowledged that he is still adjusting to the difficulty of parenting a toddler at the age of 73, following the birth of his and Katharine McPhee's son Rennie in early 2021. He also made a painful realization - he's probably not going to be around in his child's 30s or 40s.

Reflecting on his life as a new father, the famed composer revealed how parenting his son differs from raising his five daughters from prior partnerships, Allison, 52, Amy, 49, Sara, 41, Erin, 40, and Jordan, 36. He told People that he had only daughters until he had his son, and while he loves all of my daughters enormously, having a male is a bit different.

The 16-time Grammy winner, who wed Katherine in 2019, stated that a this stage in his life, things are once again different. He clarified that things are not better or worse, just different. he shared that he still work and that he's still gone a lot, but perhaps the time has became more valuable to him now that he has more runway behind him than ahead.

No matter what happens thoughm he said he intends to impart his 'knowledge' to his kid. He said he believes he can offer Rennie something, even though he won't be there when he's 50, 40, or possibly 30. He said he experienced so much with 72 years on Earth now. He reflected that it might not be a terrible trade-off.

In addition, Foster stated that becoming a father at his age has made him more patient. He shared how conceited and impatient he was when he was younger.

Although being a father again at his age was 'not something' he anticipated, Foster told People in October that he has never regretted a single day of it.

""I've loved every single day. It's the standard thing of like: "Oh, well you were so young when you had your children and you were working day and night, you never saw them," he shared.

Recently, fans received an up-close look at Rennie's affinity for drumming in a post on David's Instagram dated August 3, which featured the toddler pounding on an electronic drum pad with drumsticks. The ecstatic father captioned the photo, "Is this typical for a 17-month-old?" Erin Foster, Rennie's older sister, observed Rennie's early abilities.

The "Barely Famous" actress, suggested that the child had something she does not. Erin remarked on her father's article, "The musical gene has finally been transmitted." She joked that she's currently awaiting the activation of hers. David posted a video of Rennie playing a genuine drum set on Instagram on January 1 with the description "improvement at 22 months!!
