Trugoy the Dove missed the chance to see De La Soul grow even more decades after he founded it.
De La Soul's fans were left heartbroken after news about Trugoy the Dove's death emerged. The hip-hop star, whose real name was David Jude Jolicoeur, passed away at a hospital in Maryland.
The statement from his representative, Tony Ferguson, did not reveal his cause of death. But news outlets said he appeared to have died from natural causes. He was also reportedly struggling due to an undisclosed disease.
He was 54.
His untimely passing stole the chance from the rapper to personally witness De La Soul's growth decades after he founded it with Posdnuos (Kelvin Mercer) and Vincent Mason.
Elahe Izadi of The Washington Post wrote an article about how Trugoy the Dove died before new generations were able to discover the hip hip trio.
"Longtime fans will be able to instantly pull up the soundtracks to their teenage years," she wrote. "Or maybe some kid will discover a De La song, make a TikTok with it or just listen with astonishment at what was made by kids like him some three decades back."
The article was released following Trugoy the Dove's death and De La Soul's confirmation of its catalog's arrival on streaming services.
De La Soul's Songs To Arrive on Streaming Sites
The group and Reservoir Media released a statement confirming that De La Soul's first six albums would be released on Spotify, Apple Music, and other digital streaming sites.
De La Soul penned, "We can't believe this day is finally here, and we are excited to be able to share our music with fans, old and new."
The release will happen on the 34th anniversary of De La Soul's first album. The 1989 "3 Feet High and Rising" was released in 1989 and was inducted into the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in 2011.

Other De La Soul's songs that will be added to the sites include the tracks from the albums "De La Soul Is Dead," "Buhloone Mindstate," "Stakes Is High," "Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump," and "AOI: Bionix."
Aside from the arrival of their digital music, Trugoy the Dove also missed De La Soul's appearance at the Grammys. The group was honored during an all-star hip-hop tribute for the band's contribution to the genre in the past five decades.
