With over 26 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Hozier could easily sell out arenas if he wishes to perform at such venues. However, he revealed that he prefers playing in front of smaller crowds despite having a big fanbase; find out below why.

According to WGBH, the musician went to Boston this week in order to meet a small number of fans in two intimate shows.

Earlier this week, he performed at Newbury Comics and the crowd was only limited to 600 people who pre-ordered his new album "Unreal Earth." The singer revealed that small meet and greets in a limited venue are a big chance to support independent record stores.

He also performed at Paradise Rock Club which is much smaller than his previous events as fans were able to see him up close in person.

One of the main reasons why he chose the club was because scalpers couldn't buy and resell tickets at a higher price as smaller venues require attendees to claim their passes at the box office when the doors open.

Why Hozier Prefers Smaller Crowds

In an interview with the outlet, the 33-year-old musician said there is something with smaller crowds that makes a show "enjoyable" for him and other fans.

"A club show like this feels like it's something that very few people are in on and share together. And there is a special sense of fun that comes with a show like this you cannot get in a 20,000 [person] arena," he said of the recent event.

In addition, he also noted that club shows are fun because the energy of the crowd is so "concentrated and so intimate."

It's also a wonderful way for him to perform new music for his supporters as it is a "low-pressure" environment.
