Grammy Nominations 2024: Here's How Many Were Considered Each Category

The Recording Academy started the voting process for the 2024 Grammy Award nominations earlier today, Oct. 11, 2023. The first round of voting will end on Oct. 20, 2023, and the final list of nominees will be announced on Nov. 4, 2023, on a special telecast.

Based on insider sources, this year's most populous category, Song of the Year, is 23 times more crowded than the least submitted category, which is Best Opera Recording.

Grammy Nominations 2024: Category Count

Based on Billboard's report, Grammy voters will have a hard time deciding to narrow all the submitted entries for all categories this year.

Grammy voters are tasked to review all the entries for the 88 Grammy categories this year. There are a total of 94 categories, as there will be 6 special categories that will be decided by special committees. Specifically, these are Best Recording Package, Best Boxed/Special/Limited Edition, Best Album Notes, Best Remixed Recording, Best Historical Album, and Best Immersive Audio Album.

The General Field, composed of Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year, has fewer submissions compared to the past years.

Record of The Year only had 615, coming from 619; Song of the Year only received 642 from 686, and 476 for Album of the Year from 518. However, the Best New Artist category is the only category that spiked from 368 to 405.

This may be due to the Academy's new policy where they charged a fee for those who exceeded five submissions. The new rule is rooted in the Grammy's decision to challenge submitters to mindfully choose which songs to submit and which are Grammy-worthy.

Another significant change this year is the addition of two categories on the Big 4 - specifically Songwriter of the Year and Producer of the Year, Non-classical - making it the Big 6.

The newly introduced categories are also beefed up with entries as Best African Music Performance has 122, Best Pop Dance Recording with 107, and Best Alternative Jazz Album has 159.

2024 Grammy Awards Schedule

The first round of Grammy voting will end on Oct. 20, 2023, as the announcement of Grammy nominees will be on Nov. 4, 2023.

Meanwhile, the Grammy Awards ceremony will be taking place on Feb. 4, 2023, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
