Singer Zahara Dead at 36

Zahara reportedly died on Monday, December 11, in a hospital in Johannesburg. Her cause of death remains unknown, but her family revealed in November that she was hospitalized due to an undisclosed issue. They have yet to confirm whether her hospital stay and the cause of her death are connected.

"A legendary figure in the world of music, Zahara remarkably touched millions of people's lives with her extraordinary gift and passion for music," part of the statement read. "She leaves behind an indelible mark on the music industry and a legacy that will forever resonate in our hearts and souls."

The announcement continued, "A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. May we remember Zahara not with sorrow, but with the healing, joy, kindness and inspiration she brought to us through her life and her music."

The statement did not disclose the details of her funeral and memorial services.

Meanwhile, South Africa's sports, arts and culture minister, Zizi Kodwa, also confirmed Zahara's death in a separate statement and sent the government's condolences to the family.

What Happened to Zahara?

Prior to her demise, Zahara suffered from different health issues that led her to be hospitalized. Only a few weeks before her death, her manager, Oyama Dyosiba, said she was admitted to a medical facility after complaining of physical pains.

Dyosiba did not share further details regarding her condition.

In 2019, the manager disclosed she suffered liver disease after her battle with alcoholism. According to Zahara's sister Nomonde, the doctors already told her the singer would not make it if her habit continued.

"If [Zahara] continues drinking, she is going to die ... We are making sure that there is always someone around her to monitor her so that she doesn't start drinking again," she continued.

Zahara famously performed the title track for Nelson Mandela before his death and collaborated with other musicians for a tribute song.
