'Gutenberg! The Musical' Reviews

"Gutenberg! The Musical" received mixed reviews from critics, saying that the music and lyrics were lackluster.

"At first, all off the goings-on are entertaining in a crazy kind of way - until they become less and less so. The serviceable songs and uninspired lyrics never rise to any comedic heights; the schtick of the actors wearing dozens of caps - with the names of the multiple characters emblazoned on them - quickly grows tiresome; and the faux Gutenberg story, for all its wackiness, is just not that engaging, especially as the show stretches into a second act," Variety wrote in a review.

However, they pointed out that seeing Gad and Rannells makes up for it.

"Props are few and far between - this is a two-man show that puts on full display just what makes Gad and Rannells such special performers. They're clearly having a great time and hope you are, too," Entertainment Weekly said in a rave review. "Certainly, other performers could endeavor to make their marks on the roles - and have - but one of the major selling points of Gutenberg! is the "reunion" of Gad and Rannells. And, boy, do they sell it. Exclamation point!"

'Gutenberg! The Musical' Recoups Capital Fund

Playbill also reported that the musical production has finally recouped its initial $6.7 million initial investment. On its closing week, "Gutenberg! The Musical" grossed a total of $1,463,226.
