Boygenius delivered heartbreaking news during the group's "last show."

On Thursday, February 1, Boygenius met its fans in Los Angeles as part of its acoustic show. The members - Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus - also shared an unexpected and heartbreaking update about the band's status.

Boygenius Announces Hiatus

Videos taken during Boygenius' back-to-back private concerts at the Smell confirmed the band's impending hiatus after the "last show."

"This is our last show, and we're feeling it," Dacus said.

Meanwhile, Smell said "Not Strong Enough" would be their last song, and Baker responded, "Not ever."

Boygenius did not disclose further details about the plan, but a representative for the group confirmed the decision to Billboard.

Some were not surprised by the announcement, especially since the musicians had been open about their return being "temporary" because of their individual endeavors.

"I think people know this is a rarity and that there's no guarantee that it'll continue," Dacus told Billboard in April. "Like, we will continue to be Boygenius and be friends, but we also will get back to our own things."

Bridgers also told Rolling Stone how he would need a break if she was going on a solo album campaign.

Meanwhile, fans took to X to share their reactions to Boygenius leaving the spotlight for now.

One said, "i just woke up and wtf boygenius hiatus DOMT TALK TO ME."

"i'm trying to not be sad about boygenius hiatus thinking about their solo projects and the high possibility of them writing songs about each other," another wrote.

"Some of y'all are fr overreacting - ppl are allowed to be sad about Boygenius going on hiatus. like yes everyone knows it's not forever but let people feel their emotions jesus christ," a third chimed in.

Boygenius Might Win a Grammy

The announcement came days before the 2024 Grammy Awards where Boygenius received six nominations: Album of the Year, Best Alternative Music Album; Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical; Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song.

Boygenius tied with Taylor Swift, Billie Elish, Miley Cyrus and Olivia Rodrigo in having the same number of nominations at the Grammy's this year.

If the group wins any of the two major categories - Album of the Year and Record of the Year - they would make history as the first female group to score it since The Chicks in 2007.
