On the new track "Sober," Childish Gambino, aka Donald Glover, goes all Michael Jackson on us, and it works so well.

The former Community star sings some soulful, crystal-clear verses about enjoying the highs of being, well...high. A heavy drop hits at 2:45 (listen below) before Gambino returns to sing a few more lines. Last month, the artist sent out a tweet announcing his next mixtape, STN MTN/KAUAI. The "STN MTN" appears to be a shoutout to Gambino's hometown, Stone Mountain, Ga., and, even more interestingly, the cover art reveals that Jaden Smith will be involved as "The Boy" (whatever that means).

"Sober," a retro mix of soul and synth-pop, stands as a testament to Gambino's recent remarks about the state of rap. "I've talked about this before," he said during an interview with Hot 97. "Rap is done. Rap is done. I love hip-hop, I love rap, but the thing it was supposed to do it doesn't do anymore. It's not doing the social work it's supposed to do anymore." Don't be expecting a comedy album from the artist anytime soon either. "I don't wanna be the black dude you want me to be," he continued. "I'm constantly trying to be real. I represent real, I'm trying to do real stuff."

In that interview, which took place last week, Gambino said that his new mixtape will be out within the next two weeks, so the effort should be dropping any day now.

Music appears to be the main focus for the artist as last year Glover announced that he would be leaving NBC's Community via scrawled out notes on Instagram.
