In September, Beyoncé will celebrate MTV Video Music Awards' 40th anniversary by performing at the event.

It's a historic occasion for the program, as the Cowboy Carter singer hasn't graced the stage since winning eight times and putting on a 16-minute Lemonade medley in 2016.

While the showrunners are beyond pleased, they are hoping they can get Taylor Swift to perform too.

Beyonce Snubbed MTV VMAs For Years

The 42-year-old did not make a presence on the ceremony last year, despite receiving nominations for VMAs in 2018, 2020, and 2021. Instead, she chose to go on her Reinaissance Tour.

According to Mirror UK's source, Beyoncé is expected to generate a lot of attention and is excited about her performance at the VMAs. She is presently deciding whether to do a single song or a tribute, akin to her 2014 closing act that earned her a coveted award.

"Beyoncé is a huge get for the VMAs and will be a huge ratings draw," a source said, "She is currently figuring out how her appearance will look and whether it will be one song or a tribute similar to her 2014 closing performance when she received the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award."

The source added, "As it's such a big year, the ceremony wants to reclaim some of its prestige so reality TV stars from some of the more lowbrow shows and Tik Tok will have had a harder time gaining entry while artists like Dua Lipa, Muni Long and Billie Eilish will be given priority treatment."

Showrunners Want Taylor Swift

"They are also hoping to book Taylor Swift," the sources added.

It's the first show that Beyoncé has confirmed since her most recent album release, which broke records and made her the first black artist to have a country album debut at the top of the UK charts.

Amazingly, in her nearly 50-year career, Dolly Parton, the "Queen of Country," has never had a number one single or album in the UK. However, Beyonce has now accomplished this feat simultaneously with Cowboy Carter and lead track "Texas Hold 'Em."

On September 10, which is just four days away from the 40th anniversary of the first VMAs hosted at Radio City Music Hall, the awards will return to New York.

At the previous year's VMAs, Taylor Swift emerged victorious, winning Video of the Year for her song Anti-Hero. It is anticipated that she will compete against Beyoncé. Over 150 nations and territories will broadcast the VMAs, reaching an estimated 319 million households.
