People online are in disbelief after they have been fooled into thinking that Katy Perry had attended the 2024 MET Gala.

Artificial Intelligence-generated photos of the "Teenage Dream" singer have made rounds on X, formerly Twitter, showing two looks that perfectly encapsulate the theme of this year's charity fundraiser, "The Garden of Time."

In two of Perry's viral looks, the first shows the 39-year-old singer looking like Eve from the Garden of Eden, wearing a copper-plated metal corset and mimicking a gate. Her skirt resembles her "Roar" foliage dress but is now partnered with white roses.

In another photo, Perry was seen in a voluminous garden gown filled with flowers from the top to the hem of the dress.

At first glance, the second photo seemed to be taken from this year's gala, but a closer inspection revealed that the carpet was from the 2018 MET Gala when the theme was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."

However, the first photo was much more believable, as the carpet where Perry was standing was the official carpet for this year's "The Garden of Time" gala.

"Internet is playing with my mind right now," a fan captioned on X, expressing their confusion on the AI-generated photos.

"the most liked tweets of the night were two different AI photos of katy perry and she ended up not even attending the event....," a user shared.

"Nah cause the katy Perry look being AI makes me so mad cause it's literally the best look i've seen tonight and it's not even real," another proclaimed.

Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle, Visual Communication expert TJ Thomson pointed out the telling signs giving away the fact that these Perry's viral photos are AI-generated.

"Context is crucial. When viewed quickly on a small screen while doomscrolling on social media, it's easy to mistake the image as a real one. When you pause and zoom in, though, the internal logic of the image starts to unravel," Thomson shared. "The people and gear in the background don't look right. Faces and gear are distorted or proportions aren't realistic. These are some giveaways of the current abilities of AI generation technologies."

Thomson added that although the details can be quite discernable today, he also posited that "AI will get better and better at rendering details and doing so accurately over time."

"As such, it's best not to just look at a single image but, instead, to "look laterally" across different data points to see if the image is what it appears to show. For example, search reputable sources online for images from this year's Met Gala. Is the carpet the same as in the image in question? Did Katy Perry attend? What was she wearing? Using a reverse-image search can also help," Thomson went on to say.

Perry last attended the MET Gala in 2022, when the theme was "In America: An Anthology of Fashion."
