It looks as if Courtney Love is trying out a new type of music: Opera. Rolling Stone reports that the Hole singer has been cast in the forthcoming "pop opera" Kansas City Choir Boy as one of the leading roles.

The play will reportedly go for ten performances from Jan. 8 to Jan. 17 next year during the Prototype: Opera/Theater/Now Festival in New York.

And while we tend to automatically drift to thoughts of those over-the-top vocal yelps and tuxedo-occasions when hearing "opera," it seems this one is a little different.  According to RS, Kansas City Choir Boy is described as "a theatricalized concept album about explosive young love tested by cruel fate, told in a series of mysterious flashbacks."

Of course, that isn't stopping Love from giving it her all. On the new gig, the musician admits, "I love the concept, and I'm loving the music. I'm playing it constantly. I'm looking to do things that are different. I just finished a rock tour of Australia, and it was great, but I've been doing that for a long time. I wanted to do something challenging."

The New York Times recently spoke with the show's composer, Todd Almond, who notes that Love was a wonderful choice for the opera, calling her out for having a great voice and stellar acting chops. "I've always been fascinated with her," he told the publication.

On the aforementioned concept of the opera, Almond says, "When I say 'opera,' I don't mean it's in an operatic style. I mean it in the sense that it's a group of songs that tell a story. I write musicals, I write plays and I write what I call opera."

Aside from composing the score, Almond will also be playing the male lead in Kansas City Choir Boy.
