After the unfortunate news broke yesterday, Oct. 25, that former Cream bassist Jack Bruce died, musicians like bandmate Eric Clapton and Ringo Starr took to social media to pay tribute.

"He was a great musician and composer, and a tremendous inspiration to me," Clapton wrote on his Facebook page, Rolling Stone noted.

The legendary guitarist spent two years with Bruce in Cream, spawning some of rock's most influential music.

Other Cream member Ginger Baker added, "I am very sad to learn of the loss of a fine man, Jack Bruce ... My thoughts & wishes are with his family at this difficult time."

After Cream's dissolution in 1968, Bruce started a solo career that would last until his recent death. He was known to play with Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band occasionally.

"We lost Jack Bruce today an incredible musician writer and a good friend peace and love to all his family," Starr tweeted yesterday.

Other admirers of Bruce, like Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath — both bassists themselves — expressed their condolences as well.

"Oh man. Jack Bruce. Too much. Wow. Holy holy. I love that guy. One of a kind greatness. End of an era," Flea tweeted.

According to Jambase, The Allman Brothers Band paid tribute to Bruce at one of their last shows in New York City last night. The band performed a rendition of Cream's song "Politician" from the band's 1968 album Wheels of Fire. Check it out below.

As we reported yesterday, Bruce succumbed to complications from liver disease at age 71.

"It is with great sadness that we, Jack's family, announce the passing of our beloved Jack: husband, father, granddad, and all round legend," his family wrote. "The world of music will be a poorer place without him, but he lives on in his music and forever in our heart."
