Belle and Sebastian's upcoming album Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance will not be released until January, but today the Scottish indie pop legends have shared the album's first single, "The Party Line," which you can check out below. Anyone coming into this song expecting some of the band's signature chamber pop musings might be in for a shock, however, since this is a funky, synth-heavy dance number all the way.

Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance is set for release Jan. 19 in Europe and Jan. 20 in the United States. It will be Belle and Sebastian's ninth studio album, their first since 2010's Write About Love. It will also be the band's first full-length release since their 2013 B-sides and rarities compilation The Third Eye Centre.

"We've never made a record with this kind of sound before," drummer Richard Colburn told The Quietus about the album, which is their first with producer Ben Allen. "On the last few albums we'd put in six months of work to get everything really, really tight, so when we go into the studio, there's not really any room for maneuver as far as arrangements go — it's just a matter of playing the songs right."

"This time, with 'Party Line' and some of the others, we kept them a bit open-ended," Colburn continued. "It was a very different experience: little short bursts of energy, whereas before we've used most of the day to set up sounds."
