Today, Harlem's legendary Apollo Theater announced that pop superstar and producer Pharrell Williams would be joining its board of directors, The New York Times reports. Pharrell's appointment to the board is part of the Apollo's intentions to take on a more creative role in its productions, rather than simply serving as a venue for performers.

"The Apollo Theater embodies a tremendous amount of music history," Pharrell said in a statement, "so excited to help preserve, and expand, its legacy in American culture."

Part of the Apollo's new production aspirations include the 21st Century Apollo Campaign, which aims to raise $20 million to support programs that will headline the Harlem theater, as well as tour nationally. In addition to original productions, the campaign also aims to raise money to upgrade the theater's facilities.

According to a spokeswoman for the theater, the campaign has raised $11 million so far.

The details of Pharrell's involvement in the Apollo's board of directors have not yet been determined, though the "Happy" singer will "have more input in the organization's strategic direction," according to The Wall Street Journal, with board chairman Richard D. Parsons saying it will not be necessary for Williams "to come to every meeting and opine about governance issues."

In June, Williams performed at the Apollo Theater as part of the American Express Unstaged concert series, which pairs musicians with famous movie directors for concert films. Filmmaker Spike Lee directed Pharrell's performance, which was streamed live over the Internet, and "demonstrated the potential for ... global reach."
