Lightning Bolt comes out in a few weeks, so to promote the record, Pearl Jam has released a short documentary about how the record came to be.

Directed by Danny Clinch (Immagine In Cornice), the film shows footage of the Seattle group performing new material, jamming out in cars, surfing, and answering questions from their guest interviewers, which include Judd Apatow, Carrie Brownstein (Portlandia, Wild Flag), Former NLF star Steve Gleason (who is battling ALS), and hall-of-fame Australian surfer Mark Richards — all of whom are friends and fans of the band. Andy Smetanka animates parts of the film with metaphorical imagery, elicited by the tone of the new album.

They answer questions about why it took so long to put out a new record, whether they have hearing loss, what songs they are most proud of, and what their process is for writing songs. They also tell the story behind the track "Sirens," which Mike McCready says he wrote with the help of Eddie Vedder.

"Everybody is kind of playing out of their minds on this record," says Vedder.

The documentary features songs off the new album including, "Mind Your Manners," "Sirens," "Lightning Bolt," "Future Days" and "Getaway."

Lightning Bolt is scheduled for release Oct. 15 via Republic.
