The year is coming to a close and with that comes companies publishing the artists who racked up the biggest stats on their respective platforms. YouTube is the latest to crown its hottest artists for 2014 and the results won't surprise you (via The NY Daily News). Katy Perry & Juicy J's "Dark Horse" reigns supreme over the year with 717,734,185 views and counting, with Enrique Iglesias featuring Descemer Bueno Gente De Zona "Bailando" comes in second with 590 million views. Shakira takes the third and fourth spots with 'Cant Remember To Forget You" featuring Rihanna at 443 million views and La La La ft. Carlinhos Brown at 419 million views.

There are a few themes to take away from the list of top 25 trending videos on YouTube this year. It is obviously skewed towards artists who released their video at the beginning of the year and thus it had more time to rack up the play count. "Dark Horse" was released in February, allowing it to get a head start to 700 million plays. Other factors come into play like Shakira's "La La La" was an anthem for the World Cup this year in Brazil, the biggest sporting event in the world. It also features some of the biggest sports stars in the world including Messi, Neymar and Sergio Aguero.

Psy broke the YouTube play count earlier this year with the omnipotent "Gangnam Style," but his reign over the YouTube charts in 2014 does not end there. His single "Hangover" featuring Snoop Dogg landed at number 21 with 164 million views.

New acts showed that they weren't just popular on blogs and a few niche media outlets; they could actually back up their newfound popularity with numbers. Sam Smith, who capped off the year with six Grammy nominations, landed at 23 with "Stay With Me", which slots in just behind Canadian songstress Kiesza's hit single "Hideaway."

The rise of dance music is becoming apparent not just in the live arena, but also in digital streaming numbers as well. Three of the top 5 most streamed artists on Spotify in the United States belong to dance acts and that is carrying over to YouTube. The unfortunate viral sensation "Selfie" landed at 14, just behind Calvin Harris's "Summer." David Guetta's festival hit, "Bad" produced by Showtek with vocals from Vassy landed at 17 ahead of the Zedd produced Ariana Grande smash "Break Free."

The chart was dominated by Latin artists who took home three of the first four spots, six of the first 16 and 7 of the 25 overall songs.

There aren't many surprises in the top 25, but it is interesting to see how big these numbers can get in a year. Stream the full playlist below.
