Donald Glover's Atlanta pilot has finally been ordered by FX, more than a year after the company bought the rights. While Glover has been killing time in his primary career as rapper Childish Gambino, fans of his acting work on Community will be pumped he's returning to the silver screen.

"Donald Glover is a uniquely talented actor and performer who brings real-life experience to this subject matter," FX's Nick Grad said in a statement. "He, along with Paul Simms, has a very honest, sometimes serious, and funny perspective on life, the world of rap music and the city of Atlanta."

Deadline reported the pending deal in August 2013, but for reasons no one seem to know, and no one at FX is explaining, it's taken until now to get it ordered. Better late than never -- right?

From last year's story by Nellie Andreeva:

I hear several networks were interested in Atlanta but, in addition to the FX comedy brand, Glover also was attracted by the network's willingness to accommodate his music touring schedule. Glover is free and clear to topline Atlanta as he is no longer a regular on Community and is set to appear in five of the 13 episodes of the cult NBC comedy's upcoming fifth season.

The A.V. Club offered the following details about the show, which sounds like it's going to be hilarious:

Atlanta was created by and stars Glover as Earnest 'Earn' Marks, a college dropout whose musical ambitions are rekindled by his cousin's sudden success. Their rivalry will play out against the backdrop of the Atlanta hip-hop scene, a milieu very familiar to Atlanta native and hip-hop artist Glover. No other casting announcements have been made, but veteran producer Paul Simms, who served as a consulting producer on the HBO musical comedy Flight Of The Conchords, has signed on to co-executive produce.

Childish Gambino had a big year on the charts, and it showed with two recent Grammy nominations: Best Rap Album (Because the Internet) and Best Rap Performance ("3005").
