Songwriter Bonnie McKee is trying to break in to the spotlight. After debuting her patriotic pop song "American Girl" last month, the singer has been on the interviewing circuit.

In an interview with Interview Magazine, the singer revealed that after her first album, Trouble failed to really succeed and her singles failed to chart, she turned to songwriting. Though she struggled, McKee finally broke out in the music industry when she wrote songs for Katy Perry.

The most interesting part of the McKee profile, however, was Interview's premiere of a mashup video McKee did performing all the hits she helped to write.

"Hits....A musical portrait" begins with Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me." McKee then croons through Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream," Taio Cruz's "Dynamite," two more Perry songs "Last Friday Night (TGIF)" and "Part Of Me," Ke$ha's "C'Mon," and ends with "California Gurls" and "Wide Awake."

Though the songs were written for other performers, McKee's acoustic performance is stunning. Her high vocals and simplistic piano and guitar accompaniment highlight her songwriting genius. Each is a No. 1 hit, excepting "Wide Awake," which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

It's unknown whether or not her new song "American Girl" will be a hit and if McKee will finally be able to break out of the songwriting studio and onto the main stage. However, the writer has clearly proved that she has the chops and the writing skills, so only time will tell. Her second album is due to be released in the fall.
