Lorde has made quite the impression on the music industry with her hit "Royals," but she's also made it clear that she's not afraid to say what she thinks, even it's putting down other artists. She's brave for a 17-year-old just recently hitting the scene.

In an interview back in 2012, Lorde told Interview magazine that as she was beginning to work on her EP Love Club, she would listen to rap, including Nicki Minaj and Drake, which led her to a have a specific outlook on the industry.

"Around the middle of last year I started listening to a lot of rap, like Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as pop singers like Lana Del Rey," she said "They all sing about such opulence, stuff that just didn't relate to me -- or anyone that I knew. I began thinking, 'How are we listening to this? It's completely irrelevant.'"

Then 16-year-old Lorde had a pretty strong opinion about the industry. Since then she's also given a feminist critique of Selena Gomez's single "Come & Get It," and she criticized Taylor Swift's image in Metro Magazine: "Taylor Swift is so flawless, and so unattainable, and I don't think it's breeding anything good in young girls."

Publicity for the young singer being so outspoken doesn't make her feel like she needs to keep to herself. She told MTV in October: "I think there's a funny culture in music that's only happened over the last 15 years, that if you have an opinion about something in music that isn't 100-percent good, you're a 'hater,' even if you have perfectly reasonable grounds for that critique."

More power to the young pop star for feeling empowered to speak up, as long as she's cool with backlash from the media and other artists sometimes.
